Loeb leads in Finland

Sebastien Loeb Citroen drivers Sebastien Loeb and Sebastien Ogier of France topped the leaderboard after the Rally of Finland prologue on Thursday with Finn Jari-Matti Latvala third in his ford. The day's action near Jyvaskyla took in three stages and 39.7 competitive kilometres with local driver Jari Ketomaa blazing the early trail. But by the end of proceedings the Finn had dropped to fourth, seven seconds adrift of world champion Loeb who was just under three seconds clear of Ogier. Mikko Hirvonen suffered, the Finn's Fiesta engine cutting out in the opening stage which caused him to run wide and hit a tree. The resulting suspension and brake damage meant he lost time in the following stages and is more than two minutes off the lead. Friday's first full day of action takes the crews south to a host of new stages around a remote service area in the city of Lahti.

Lochte has no time to rest on laurels

Ryan Lochte of the USA Ryan Lochte had little opportunity to soak up the fact he had become the first swimmer to break a long course world record since controversial polyurethane swimsuits were outlawed as his focus shifted to the 200 metres backstroke final on Friday. Lochte, who broke his own world record in retaining the 200 metres individual medley on Thursday, qualified fastest for the 200 backstroke just over an hour later and was immediately asked what it meant for his preparations for Friday and beyond. "Forget about the 200 individual medley, I'll just focus on the 200 backstroke," Lochte told reporters. "It's probably the most difficult item for me. "I just want to focus on 200 backstroke." The 26-year-old can win his third gold medal of the championships with victory in the backstroke, though Japan's Ryosuke Irie, the silver medallist in the 200 backstroke at the world championships in Rome in 2009 will push him hard, havin...

Islanders acquire Rolston in trade with Devils

New Jersey Devils left wing Brian Rolston The New York Islanders have acquired center Brian Rolston and a conditional draft pick in 2012 from the New Jersey Devils for right wing Trent Hunter, the teams said on Thursday. The 38-year-old Rolston, a 2007 All-Star who has spent the past three seasons with the Devils, collected 14 goals and 34 points in 65 games last season. He played on the Devils' 1995 Stanley Cup winners during a previous stint in New Jersey and has also played with the Colorado Avalanche, Boston Bruins and Minnesota Wild during a 16-year career. Four times he scored 30 or more goals. Hunter, 31, who has scored 99 goals in 459 career games with the Islanders, played in only 17 games in 2010-11 with one goal and four points before having season-ending surgery for a torn knee ligament in February.

Hernandez injury puts Owen in frame for Manchester United

Former England striker Michael Owen could have a big part to play in Manchester United's start to the season after Javier Hernandez was ruled out for two weeks with mild concussion. The Mexico striker suffered concussion in a training session on Wednesday before United beat the MLS All-Stars 4-0 in a pre-season match. "He got concussion in training and we dealt with that," manager Sir Alex Ferguson said. "We took him to hospital, he had a scan, it was all clear. He is back in the hotel. He is in his room and will be out for a couple of weeks. "He would never have been available for Barcelona anyway because he has just come back from his break after the Gold Cup. He will travel with us though. He is OK for that." Hernandez is now unlikely to be fit in time for the Community Shield match against Manchester City on August 7, leaving Dimitar Berbatov and Owen to fight it out for a starting berth alongside Wayne Rooney. Owen signed a one-year extens...

Argentina striker Aguero signs for Manchester City

Argentina striker Sergio Aguero confirmed Wednesday that he has joined big-spending English Premier League club Manchester City from Atletico Madrid. The 23-year-old revealed the news on his official Twitter feed, saying: "I'm already a City player. Happy to be in this club, in this city. Thank you all for the welcome and reception." Details of the transfer have not yet been released, but the deal is thought to be worth about 38 million pounds (62 million dollars), which would be a club record. Aguero's father in law is Argentina football legend Diego Maradona, and the striker is regarded as one of the best young forwards in world football. City moved quickly for Aguero after their captain, Carlos Tevez, announced that he intends to leave the club. Tevez, who captained City to a place in the next Champions League, wants to be closer to his family in South America. Although a move to Corinthians of Brazil recently broke down, City are resigned to his depar...

Blatter mum on Rummenigge's call for revolution

World football supremo Joseph Blatter on Wednesday did not want to comment on an attack by European Club Association leader Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on corruption in the ruling body FIFA and his call for a revolution from club level. "No comment," Blatter told a news conference in Rio ahead of Saturday's World Cup qualifying round draw. British daily The Guardian on Wednesday quoted Rummenigge as speaking of a "daily corruption process at FIFA." "I don't accept any longer that we (should be) guided by people who are not serious and clean," he said. "Now is the moment to intervene. Because knowing something is wrong is an obligation to change. "It's time for democracy, transparency and the right balance in the football family," said Rummenigge. "I will give them a chance but I'm ready for a revolution if that's the only way to come to a solution." FIFA has been rocked by corruption allegations around ...

Dates and qualifying pots named for 2014 World Cup

The football World Cup in Brazil will take place June 12-July 13, 2014, the secretary general of the ruling body FIFA, Jerome Valcke, said on Wednesday. The 32 teams will play 64 matches in an expected 12 cities as Brazil hosts the showcase event for the second time, the first being in 1950. Valcke said that the match schedule and the final venues will be announced in October after ratification by local organizers and the FIFA executive committee. Brazil has come under attack for slow preparations. FIFA boss Joseph Blatter on Wednesday said that a lot of work is left to be done but also expressed faith in the hosts. I am sure, with trust and confidence, that Brazil and FIFA will deliver an exceptional World Cup," Blatter said. Football top officials are in Rio for the World Cup qualifying draw on Saturday which determines the 31 finalists from 203 entered teams to join the automatically qualified hosts. FIFA said that 824 qualifying matches will be staged around the...

Minister: No long-term F1 future for Nuerburgring

Formula One autoracing has no future on the German Nuerburgring course, a regional minister told the German Press Agency on Wednesday. "It is not our long-term aim to keep Formula One. We want other formats, want to embark on a future-orientated path," said Eveline Lemke, economics minister and deputy prime minister of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, where the Nuerburgring is located. The Greens Party member Lemke told dpa that F1 racing is "not a concept for the future, and definitely not a solution for the Nuerburgring." The latest Nuerburgring Grand Prix last weekend is expected to have run up a deficit of 13.5 million euros (19.5 million dollars). Lemke said that future state funding will be reduced considerably. German organizers have had trouble financing an F1 race and the German GP now alternates between Nuerburgring and Hockenheimring. The 2012 edition is at Hockenheim and a possible next Nuerburgring race 2013. F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone rec...

Barcelona report smaller pre-tax loss than expected

Barcelona made a smaller loss than expected last season and are confident of returning to profit in the 2011-12 campaign after two years of deficits, vice-president for economic affairs Javier Faus said on Tuesday. The Spanish and European champions posted a pre-tax loss of 9.3 million euros ($13.5 million) in the year to the end of June, less than half the 21.4 million euros expected and down from 83 million euros in the year-earlier period, Faus said. Winning the Champions League, the club's new sponsorship deal with Qatar Foundation, a strong turnout at the Camp Nou stadium and a surge in visitors to the club's museum had helped trim the deficit, he added. "Our obligation is to make a profit from next season and we will do that," he said. "For the first time in two years we will present a budget that foresees profit." In a separate statement on their website (www.fcbarcelona.cat), Barca said the sales of players Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Dmytro Chygr...

Dortmund renew Piszczek contract until 2016

Lukasz Piszczek Borussia Dortmund have renewed the contract of Poland right back Lukasz Piszczek until 2016, the Bundesliga champions said on Tuesday. Piszczek, 26, came to Dortmund in 2010 from Hertha Berlin on a three-year deal until 2013. He is the latest Dortmund player to commit himself to the club long-term, following Marcel Schmelzer, Mario Goetze, Mats Hummels and Kevin Grosskreutz. "Borussia Dortmund are a great club, I am delighted to play for them over the next five years," said Piszczek, who was named "one of the top Bundesliga players on his position" by Dortmund sports director Michael Zorc.

Serie A clubs Chieva and Atalanta named in match

Chievo Verona and Atalanta of the Serie A are among 18 clubs named on suspicion of match-fixing, the Italian football federation FIGC said on Tuesday. Twenty-six players and officials, including former Italy player Giuseppe Signori and Atalanta captain Cristiano Doni, have also been mentioned in a report by FIGC prosecutor Stefano Palazzi. The FIGC probe is related to a criminal investigation into match-fixing/betting which at first centred on the lower leagues but now concerns 60 games in the top three divisions. Sixteen people, including Signori, who protests in innocence, were arrested two months ago. They are suspected to have formed an organised system featuring former and current players, sports betting operators and others which manipulated games to rake in large sums from betting on the games. The case will be dealt with by the FIGC disciplinary commission. A date is yet to be set. Chievo will reportedly escape with a fine because they are said not have been involv...

CAS postpones Contador hearing until November

Alberto Contador The doping hearing of Spanish cyclist Alberto Contador has been moved from next week to November, the Court of Arbitration for Sport said on Tuesday. The CAS said in a statement that it granted "a request for a second exchange of written submissions between the parties as well as for a new procedural calendar. "As a consequence of the parties' request, the hearing which was scheduled for 1, 2 and 3 August 2011 is cancelled and will be rescheduled for new dates, probably in November 2011." The CAS said the request was made by the World Anti-Doping Agency and supported by the other three parties involved in the case. The WADA and the ruling cycling body UCI are challenging the acquittal of Contador by the Spanish cycling federation. Contador tested positive for clenbuterol during the 2010 Tour de France which he went on to win. He escaped a ban, stating that he took in the substance via contaminated beef. If found guilty of a doping of...

The towering Argentine played just three tournaments last year because of an injured right wrist but all that is largely forgotten and he is excited to be back in form with the U.S. hardcourt season ahead of him.
