Lochte has no time to rest on laurels

Ryan Lochte of the USA

Ryan Lochte had little opportunity to soak up the fact he had become the first swimmer to break a long course world record since controversial polyurethane swimsuits were outlawed as his focus shifted to the 200 metres backstroke final on Friday.

Lochte, who broke his own world record in retaining the 200 metres individual medley on Thursday, qualified fastest for the 200 backstroke just over an hour later and was immediately asked what it meant for his preparations for Friday and beyond.

"Forget about the 200 individual medley, I'll just focus on the 200 backstroke," Lochte told reporters. "It's probably the most difficult item for me.

"I just want to focus on 200 backstroke."

The 26-year-old can win his third gold medal of the championships with victory in the backstroke, though Japan's Ryosuke Irie, the silver medallist in the 200 backstroke at the world championships in Rome in 2009 will push him hard, having just finished behind Lochte in their semi-final.

Rebecca Soni and Kosuke Kitajima, the Beijing Olympic champions in the 200 breaststroke, will be seeking their own motivation other than gold medals in their respective finals.

Soni, who has blitzed the breaststroke field in Shanghai, can complete the 100-200 breaststroke double with victory, while Kitajima will be looking for a guaranteed ticket to next year's London Olympics with a win.

Kitajima, who won the 100-200 breaststroke double at the Athens and Beijing Olympics, surprisingly failed to medal in the 100 breaststroke in Shanghai.

"I was nervous in the 100m because Alexander (Dale Oen, of Norway) was next to me and he is very competitive," Kitajima said.

"My body didn't respond as I expected. I am satisfied with my (200 semi-final) performance."

Britain's Fran Halsall will line up as a slight favourite in the 100 metres freestyle final after qualifying fastest, just ahead of Dutchwoman Femke Heemskerk.

Beijing 800 metres freestyle champion Rebecca Adlington is also slated to start in the 800 freestyle heats, while Michael Phelps begins the defence of his 100 butterfly title.

Brazil struggle to beat 10-man Ghana in friendly

Brazil, with playmaker Ronaldinho back in the side, struggled to beat 10-man Ghana 1-0 in a friendly at Fulham's Craven Cottage ground on Monday.  Leandro Damiao struck the only goal on the stroke of halftime, running on to a defence-splitting ball from Fernandinho and finding the corner of the net from a tight angle.  It was one of the few moments of invention from the former world champions, even with the crafty Ronaldinho returning for his first international appearance since November after showing excellent form for Brazilian title contenders Flamengo.  Ghana never threatened after having defender Daniel Opare sent off in the 32nd minute, a series of over exuberant challenges earning him repeated warnings from Mike Dean before the English referee ran out of patience.  The game started at a furious pace but the red card changed things, with Ghana retreating after halftime in a bid to keep Brazil at bay.  The...

Brief news from La Liga ahead of this weekend's matches (All times GMT):  * Barcelona have promoted youth team winger Isaac Cuenca to the first team with an improved contract which will tie him until 2015, the European champions said on Friday.  Cuenca, 21, made his debut in the Champions League last October and has made 15 first-team appearances since.  He is likely to get further opportunities starting at Villarreal on Saturday (2100) as Pep Guardiola has David Villa, Ibrahim Afellay, Andreu Fontas, Andres Iniesta and Alexis Sanchez out injured.  * Villarreal, who started the season playing in the Champions League, secured their first win under new coach Jose Molina last weekend but are only kept out of the bottom three by goal difference.  "We have had a tough season so far," defender Gonzalo Rodriguez said. "We need a special performance to help us to believe in ourselves again."  Villarreal have a d...
