Brazil struggle to beat 10-man Ghana in friendly

Brazil, with playmaker Ronaldinho back in the side, struggled to beat 10-man Ghana 1-0 in a friendly at Fulham's Craven Cottage ground on Monday.  Leandro Damiao struck the only goal on the stroke of halftime, running on to a defence-splitting ball from Fernandinho and finding the corner of the net from a tight angle.  It was one of the few moments of invention from the former world champions, even with the crafty Ronaldinho returning for his first international appearance since November after showing excellent form for Brazilian title contenders Flamengo.  Ghana never threatened after having defender Daniel Opare sent off in the 32nd minute, a series of over exuberant challenges earning him repeated warnings from Mike Dean before the English referee ran out of patience.  The game started at a furious pace but the red card changed things, with Ghana retreating after halftime in a bid to keep Brazil at bay.  The...

Reports: Lassana Diarra to leave Real Madrid for Tottenham

Lassana Diarra is about to leave Spanish giants Real Madrid for Premier League club Tottenham, according to media reports on Saturday. Madrid sports daily AS said on Saturday that Diarra, 26, "is one step away from joining Tottenham," and that the London club would pay Real around 11.5 million euros (16.5 million dollars) for the French player. Diarra joined Real from Portsmouth in January 2009 and quickly became a fixture in midfield and at right-back. However, new coach Jose Mourinho hardly used him last season, and he is now considered surplus to requirements at the Estadio Bernabeu.

Aguero scores as Manchester City open season with convincing win

Sergio Aguero scored twice Monday in his Premier League debut as Manchester City made a confident start to the new season with a convincing 4-0 win over newly promoted Swansea City. The Argentina forward, signed in the summer for around 38 million pounds from Atletico Madrid, scored the second and fourth goals, while strikes by Edin Dzeko and David Silva helped secure a comprehensive win. The victory put them alongside Manchester United, Bolton Wanderers and Wolverhampton Wanderers as winners on the opening weekend. City manager Roberto Mancini left Aguero on the substitutes' bench, but Yaya Toure almost put the home side ahead in the first minute with a fine shot, blocked on the line by Alan Tate. Swansea played some nice football and matched City in the first half, though they needed a fine save by Michael Vorm to deny Silva, who minutes later hit the crossbar. Vorm then kept out Dzeko, but Swansea needed another piece of luck to st...
