Manchester United target Sahin as frustrations grow over Lucas Moura pursuit

The Old Trafford club are keeping tabs on the Real Madrid man, who would be available for around €25.5 million this summer after an injury-hit season with the Spanish champions

Spain: Real Madrid, Nuri Sahin

Manchester United have turned their attentions to Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin after growing increasingly frustrated in their pursuit of Lucas Moura.

watch-kora.com understands that the Old Trafford outfit are looking at alternative options to the Sao Paulo youngster, who has been valued at close to €38.3 million (£30m) by his club, and have highlighted Sahin as a potentially cheaper target after being made aware of his availability from the Spanish capital.

The Turkey international is surplus to requirements at the Santiago Bernabeu after joining the club from Borussia Dortmund last summer in a move that has so far been blighted by injuries and inconsistent form.

Jose Mourinho is keen to offer Sahin a full pre-season in order to impress at the Liga giants, but Madrid would be open to considering an offer.

Bayern Munich and Galatasaray have been linked with Sahin in recent weeks, while Tottenham made enquiries over bringing him to White Hart Lane as part of Luka Modric's expected move to the Spanish champions, but were rebuffed by the 23-year-old.

The midfielder made clear his intention to stay with the Spanish giants in May, claiming: "I have the desire to succeed here and want to prove my worth at Madrid. I'm living the dream at this club."

However, with the likely arrival of Modric set to push Sahin further down Mourinho's midfield pecking order, United's ability to offer him greater first-team opportunities could see the Turkish star reconsider his options.

Any deal to sign Sahin would cost around €25.5m (£20m), but the Premier League runners-up have not ruled out taking the playmaker on a season-long loan deal to keep within their limited summer transfer budget.

Recent United signing Shinji Kagawa played alongside Sahin at Dortmund two seasons ago and has offered his endorsement of the Madrid man, whose arrival could also potentially provide strong commercial benefits due to the Red Devils' sponsorship links with Turkish Airlines.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils are still keeping tabs on Lucas, but are fearful of being priced out of the race to sign the Brazilian wonderkid, as was exclusively revealed by Goal.com last week.

The Sao Paulo teenager is currently in Britain ahead of the Olympic football tournament next week, and should make an appearance against Team GB in a warm-up match at Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium on Friday evening.

Brazil struggle to beat 10-man Ghana in friendly

Brazil, with playmaker Ronaldinho back in the side, struggled to beat 10-man Ghana 1-0 in a friendly at Fulham's Craven Cottage ground on Monday.  Leandro Damiao struck the only goal on the stroke of halftime, running on to a defence-splitting ball from Fernandinho and finding the corner of the net from a tight angle.  It was one of the few moments of invention from the former world champions, even with the crafty Ronaldinho returning for his first international appearance since November after showing excellent form for Brazilian title contenders Flamengo.  Ghana never threatened after having defender Daniel Opare sent off in the 32nd minute, a series of over exuberant challenges earning him repeated warnings from Mike Dean before the English referee ran out of patience.  The game started at a furious pace but the red card changed things, with Ghana retreating after halftime in a bid to keep Brazil at bay.  The...

Spain Roundup-Barca promote Cuenca to first team

Brief news from La Liga ahead of this weekend's matches (All times GMT):  * Barcelona have promoted youth team winger Isaac Cuenca to the first team with an improved contract which will tie him until 2015, the European champions said on Friday.  Cuenca, 21, made his debut in the Champions League last October and has made 15 first-team appearances since.  He is likely to get further opportunities starting at Villarreal on Saturday (2100) as Pep Guardiola has David Villa, Ibrahim Afellay, Andreu Fontas, Andres Iniesta and Alexis Sanchez out injured.  * Villarreal, who started the season playing in the Champions League, secured their first win under new coach Jose Molina last weekend but are only kept out of the bottom three by goal difference.  "We have had a tough season so far," defender Gonzalo Rodriguez said. "We need a special performance to help us to believe in ourselves again."  Villarreal have a d...
