Rooney: 'Welbeck is Manchester United's Player of the Season'

England forward believes his strike partner at Old Trafford deserves award followin an outstanding breakthrough campaign and tips him for greatness with club and country

EPL - Queens Park Rangers v Manchester United, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney reveals he will vote for Danny Welbeck for the club's Player of the Season award after an impressive breakthrough campaign at Old Trafford.

Welbeck was a highly-rated youngster but after growing frustrated at a lack of first-team opportunities last season, he went on a season-long loan at Sunderland and has returned to form an impressive partnership with Wayne Rooney.

Welbeck’s fine season has seen him break into the England squad and Rooney believes his strike partner has the potential to be a great player.

"There are a few candidates for Player of the Season, but I'd have to say Welbeck," Rooney told The Mirror.

"Danny's been brilliant and has spent a lot of time working on his finishing which has paid off.
"I think he'll become a great player, not just for United but for England as well.

"He brings a lot of energy to the team. He works very hard and always has defenders on the back foot, which is great for me as it gives me space to get on the ball.

"I always try to help the young lads, and I speak to Danny in particular a lot.

"He's still young and sometimes the younger players need that guidance in games or in training to get the best out of them."

Brazil struggle to beat 10-man Ghana in friendly

Brazil, with playmaker Ronaldinho back in the side, struggled to beat 10-man Ghana 1-0 in a friendly at Fulham's Craven Cottage ground on Monday.  Leandro Damiao struck the only goal on the stroke of halftime, running on to a defence-splitting ball from Fernandinho and finding the corner of the net from a tight angle.  It was one of the few moments of invention from the former world champions, even with the crafty Ronaldinho returning for his first international appearance since November after showing excellent form for Brazilian title contenders Flamengo.  Ghana never threatened after having defender Daniel Opare sent off in the 32nd minute, a series of over exuberant challenges earning him repeated warnings from Mike Dean before the English referee ran out of patience.  The game started at a furious pace but the red card changed things, with Ghana retreating after halftime in a bid to keep Brazil at bay.  The...

"We need a special performance to help us to believe in ourselves again."  Villarreal have a d...
